Western Women’s Hockey League expands into Manitoba
The Manitoba Maple Leafs were invited to join the Western Women’s Hockey League as a franchise according to President Byron Stephen. The Maple Leafs will join the league for the 2010-2011 season. The Manitoba Maple Leafs expands the WWHL’s line up of top notch teams and elite female hockey players with experience on NCAA, CIS, ACAC, National and Olympic teams. The league features the best female players of western Canada and the US. It offers a host of entertaining games as well as continued training opportunities for National team prospects in Canada the US and other host players.
Byron Stephen adds "The WWHL is very pleased to include the Manitoba Maples Leafs in the upcoming schedule. It more opportunity for competition and training for a greater number of elite female hockey players." Chantal Larocque said, “We are thrilled to join the WWHL. The Manitoba Maple Leafs is an organization built from the demand for high performance senior female hockey players in all of Manitoba. To compete and train at a national level as well as keep developing senior female hockey players, the MML have adapted a Gold and Silver Senior Team Program. The Gold team participates in the WWHL. The Silver program participates in the Winnipeg Senior Women’s League.

The four core female ice hockey teams in the WWHL include: Strathmore Rockies, Minnesota Whitecaps and the Edmonton Chimos and now the Manitoba Maple Leafs. Calgary's X-treme team is a member of the league, but will spend the upcoming season re-establishing a home arena and training returning Olympic team and newly recruited players. They anticipate fully returning to the league for the 2011-2012 season.
The WWHL league commences this season in November 2010 and play through March 2011. The league will culminate their season with the Clarkson Cup; the National Championship of Women’s hockey when the strongest team from the WWHL faces the strongest team from the CWHL in the east. WWHL is looking forward to bringing the cup home again this year! The WWHL Whitecaps of Minnesota won the Clarkson Cup in March 2010. The Clarkson Cup will be held in Alberta in March 2011. Details have yet to be determined.

The mission of the Strathmore Rockies is to contribute to the development of the game of hockey for local girls, provide exposure for the Strathmore and surrounding communities in western Canada, and increase the awareness of women's hockey nationally. Our team will develop role models for aspiring players, add to the community through involvement in local charities, and offer a competitive environment for women to play and grow as elite athletes while maintaining a personal and professional career. The Strathmore Rockies are committed to delivering the highest quality of hockey entertainment and creating positive memorable experiences for all of our supporters.






The Family Centre acts as hub of recreational programs in Strathmore. Built in 1990, the Gold Arena has 700 seating in bleachers, with the potential for 500 more seats on the floor.
