Strathmore, AB – The Strathmore Rockies split two back-to-back games against the Edmonton Chimos, playing Saturday, January 23 and Sunday, January 24, 2010. The Rockies battled to win Saturday’s game 3-1, with both teams accumulating 18 minutes worth of penalty minutes. The Rockies were first to score on a Chimos penalty kill, with forward Samantha Holmes notching a power play goal, assisted by Reagan Fischer and Delaney Collins. Holmes claimed another with the assist from Fischer and Nicki Robinson, giving the Rockies a 2-0 lead, ending the first period. The Chimos struggled to put themselves on the board, finally netting a goal halfway through the second period. The Rockies secured their win the third period with a short-handed goal from Delaney Collins, unassisted. Not surprisingly, Holmes was named player of the game for the Rockies for her two goals. The Chimos named goalie Amanda Squire player of the game for her performance, turning away 31 of 34 shots on goal.
Sunday’s game didn’t unravel the same for the Rockies, ending in a 5-3 loss. The first period was scoreless despite a strong effort from both teams. The Chimos scored first with a quick goal within minutes of starting the second period. The Rockies answered back with a goal from Delaney Collins, but Edmonton retaliated with another two goals, ending the period 3-1. The Rockies entered the third period prepared to win, claiming a quick second goal by Taryn Fjeld, followed by one from Sarah Daniel five minutes later. Daniel’s goal closed the gap to just one point for the Rockies, but Chimos’ Lindsay McAlpine secured the win for Edmonton with her third goal of the game, ending in the 5-3 loss. McAlpine won player of the game for her hat trick, and Daniel took home the hardware for Strathmore.
The Rockies play the Chimos on Saturday, February 27, 2010, 5 p.m. at the Strathmore Family Centre.
